...or the mice, either.
That tomato plant? The one I was in despair of getting anything from, what with the insane heat? It has TWO NEW FRUIT.
Seems that at some point overnight the temperature got cool enough for them to do their thing and make baby tomatoes. Now, if I can just figure a way to keep the critters at bay.........

I sit in the yard with a super soaker and squirt the feral cats when the come by, and they have been staying away. I thought I'd need to fill it with my pee, but the fear of the water seems to be enough.
I'm housesitting, and I'm in agonies thinking that my sister is going to get back home before I get at least ONE tomato off of these plants. I've tried begging, I've tried pleading, I've tried speaking in tongues. Six more days. I saw a blush on one of the bastards today, and almost wept...
I read somewhere that spreading crushed walnut shells around the area of the plants keeps the little critters away, it's not comfortable for them to walk on. Maybe it's worth a try! And yay for your new tomatoes! :)
cover them with chicken wire. Maybe barbed chicken wire. Oh, and a nasty dog chained beside them couldn't hurt.
